I found an article on National Geographic called “The Unlikely Beauty of Broken Glass” by Melody Rowell. She talks about Oded Balilty who is an Israeli photographer. She talks about how when he was across the street from a glass bottle factory something caught his eye. He talks about how beautiful the pile of broken glass was. I found there was a lot to pull from this article. First the title “The Unlikely” I thought was interesting because I found a common theme in a lot of beauty interviews was the fact that we feel beauty when we are not expecting it or in unexpected places. A quote I noticed was “the beauty is found not just in the shapes and colors but also in the symbolism. “They put the glasses in the desert,” he says. “It’s very symbolic. It’s like the bottles are dying there, and they get new life. It’s like ‘from dust to dust.’ So to be in the middle of this circle, it’s something that I really enjoy watching.” I felt this related back to Armstrong and how beauty is not just the sense drive but the form as well.

I think it is going to be hard choose just two podcasts because I felt a lot of them really good and different points on beauty. I may want to use Colin’s podcast. I liked how his interviewee had that immediate gratification with the whale shark and then something that lasts longer how he decided he was going to study marine bIo. I may also use Syris’s podcast because I loved a lot of the points Professor Emerson talks about. Including how we can find beauty anywhere and in unexpected places. I liked how she compared it to art and how they are different things. Finally how she compared beauty with the the sun and how life is horrible but still has beauty, and how you can’t look directly at some of the bad things.

  1. I agree with what you had to say! I think the article that you chose will really help to support the claims that you are going to make throughout your paper. I think the two podcasts that you chose will make your claims stronger as well. You could also try using Tehya’s podcast as well because her interviewee had a lot to say about how society views beauty.

  2. I really like the article that you found. I think it will really strengthen your article. I can’t think of anyone’s podcast that would fit better. There were definitely a lot of really good ones but I really think you chose the right two. Good luck on your paper! I really think you have the basis for a good argument.
