1- The surrounding context of the text is that is that the essay was originally published in the World-Post which is and online news and blog site. The essay is about empathy and how art has a big role in allowing people to feel it. “Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” is written by Yo-Yo Ma. Yo-Yo Ma is a Cellist and songwriter who has won 17 Grammy Awards. I noticed through his bio that he is someone that clearly has knowledge of the Arts. So clearly he has the right to advocate for the benefit of using art in education.

2- The essay is about empathy and how art has a big role in allowing people to feel it. Instead of using STEM in education Yo-Yo Ma believes STEAM is more effective as it brings Art in to the curriculum. The purpose of reading this text is to learn Yo-Yo Ma’s point of view on how art can help people be more empathetic and how beneficial it can be with education. This is interesting to read after learning about the EA’s point of view on art.

3- The intentional context if the text is so what if we didn’t have art. Now most schools use the STEM process rather then the STEAM process which adds Art.

Cellist- a person who plays the cello.

Empathy- the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Integrate- combine (one thing) with another so that they become a whole.
