If I were to expand on Armstrong’s statement “To regard beauty as a luxury adornment or a social signifier was to miss the true potential of the experience,” I would say that he means if you think of beauty as a physical thing or something that decorates you are missing the true meaning of beauty and the experience that comes with it. That is because beauty if more than the “luxury adornment” or a “social signifier” it is supposed to be an experience. I view beauty as that, something you experience and not just see but feel as well. I feel that the UNE community, or at least our class from the conversations we have had feel the same way. We believe beauty comes from within someone rather then just what is on the outside. Also I think beauty is different for everyone though. I like a quote from Armstrong “What matters is that something does, and that something is what we call beautiful.” I like this quote because he is talking about how other view beauty, and the fact that others may not get excited like he did with the portrait of madame Devaucay. He did not care about that he cared about the fact that something made them feel that way. It didn’t have to be the same thing but experiencing beauty is what matters, not necessarily what the beauty is.
