The TED talk I chose is Titus Kaphar: How Can We Address Centuries of Racism In Art? This TED talk stood out to me while we listened in class because I found his beliefs to be fascinating. To me, after listening to his conversation I thought he really had no limit on art. It talked a lot about how we should not try to erase any of it, but we should make new art next to the old ones. This reminded me of a quote one of my coaches said to me, and that was that we need to know our history that way we do not repeat it. This is exactly what Kaphar is saying. We need to keep the old art up so we know where we were as a country, and make new art next to it so we know where we are now. This transitions to the next question of what is the power of art that Kaphar talks about. Like before, it has the power to show the future, where we were. Kaphar talks about one painting and how a white man is the tallest, and how the woman is wearing a gold necklace. These are all things the artist did on purpose in order for us to see. This was interesting to me because I am not big into art so I never really realize those things, but those are some of the powers art has in showing a lot more than what I normally see. I enjoyed listening to his TED talk online and hearing why he got into art, and how he met his wife. It was pretty funny.
